According to a report from the Chicago Tribune, Disney’s latest reboot, The Lion King, is crushing it at the box office, however, the film has stiff competition with Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

This past weekend, Tarantino’s R-rated movie dedicated to the golden era of Hollywood opened with a whopping $40,000,000 in 3,659 theaters in Canada as well as in the United States. Reportedly, it is his best opening weekend yet.

Moreover, on Friday, Tarantino broke his own record with his highest-earning Friday with $16.8 million. The movie was in second place behind The Lion King, which earned yet another $75.5 million, a decrease of approximately 60%.

Directed by Jon Favreau, the CG photorealistic blockbuster is a remake of the classic early 1990s animated movie. Thus far, Jon’s film is the fourth-biggest release of the year after approximately 10 days in theaters. The Lion King has earned $612 million for a total around the world of close to a billion – $963 million.

As it was previously reported, Disney has crushed it at the box office this past year, and they now have in their possession five of the highest-grossing movies, including Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story 4, Captain Marvel, and Avengers: Endgame.

Before Once Upon A Time In Hollywood opened this past weekend, Sony Studios dropped their expectations to around $30 million on account of the fact the film is against Disney and their highly anticipated remake of The Lion King. Sony projected an opening weekend of $30,000,000.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, the movie has accrued very positive reviews this far. CinemaScore, however, gave the movie just a ‘B’ score. Previously, Quentin’s movies Django Unchained, as well as Inglorious Basterds, had much higher ratings among audiences.

Quentin’s latest movie cost him $90,000,000 to create, his expensive yet, probably on account of his cast of Leonardo DiCaprio as well as Brad Pitt in the leading roles. This marks the second time Quentin has worked with both Leo and Brad, collaborating with the former in Django Unchained and the latter in Inglorious Basterds.
